We are in the midst a revolution—one that has taken to the streets around the globe. As we march and demand the demolition of the systemic injustices that plague our democracy, we are met head-on by the “boys in blue”—a fraternal brotherhood of heroes. This precarious ideology is instilled on day one of the academy and re-enforced by the same media that assassinates the humanity of unarmed black men every evening on the news. But what if this barbarous gallantry were challenged by those who have suffered the most? “Dear Blue” shares the contents of a letter addressed to a police officer from the victim of deadly traffic stop. In a world where police officers had to confront their victims via letter, could apathy be transformed into empathy? Could their fear be reconciled and repurposed in an effort to better protect and serve their communities. Though no such world exists, where there is reason there is hope. In the words of James Baldwin, “Not everything that is faced can be changed, but nothing can be changed until it is faced.” - Bryan Carter
lyrics
Dear Blue, it’s me
Don’t want to fight, please read
I thought I’d write to you and share my point of view
No don’t you cry, for me
Please wipe your eyes and see my blackness clearly
No I never caused any pain or harm to you, Dear Blue…
I see your lights, I know the drill
My IDs out, hands on the wheel
For you, Dear Blue
When I think of all the things that I’ll never get to do
And all the things I know I’ll miss, like spring and family barbecues
And my mothers smile is gone because of you
Because of you, Dear Blue
Dear Blue, I’m here
To reprimand your fear
I know I’ve promised not to be unfair to you, Dear Blue
Have you thought about that night?
How your fear…it stole my life
It’s true, Dear Blue
When I think of all the things that I’ll never get to do
And all the things I know I’ll miss, like spring and family barbecues
And my fathers eyes, will cry forever too
Because of you, Dear Blue
Because of you, Dear Blue
Dear Blue, that’s all
I hope you’ve learned from this letter I’ve wrote
And the next time that a brown boy frightens you
Remember me, Dear Blue
